Welcome to the Sacred Heart website! We hope this website will entice you to come and visit us in person! We will attempt to give you a taste of what you can expect to feast on if you were to come and worship with us on the weekend: the limitless love of the Sacred Heart of Jesus being poured out to us - His beloved daughters and sons!
We are located in the heart of North Omaha, an area which has a colorful history, current challenges, but a bright future. Our neighborhood has witnessed the settlement of the early Irish immigrants, the “white flight” and racial riots of the 1960s, the economic struggles in the aftermath of the closing of the stockyards and, more recently, the influx of immigrants and asylum-seekers from troubled areas of our world.
Through it all, we wish we could say that Sacred Heart has ALWAYS been a beacon of hope but, regrettably, that is not the case. We acknowledge the sinful part of our past which includes 100 years ago when our African American brothers and sisters were turned away at our doors. We seek forgiveness and healing for this sinful past so that we can be ever vigilant to never repeat that history.
Today we are a beacon of hope and a “destination parish” (people come from long distances to worship with us) and a place where ALL ARE WELCOME! Many people have told me that Sacred Heart was their last stop as they contemplated leaving the Catholic Church. They were grateful to find a permanent home here.
One story that exemplifies the attraction to Sacred Heart was shared with me when I was finishing my second year here: a couple introduced themselves and said they used to come every week while their children were in high school. Their kids had been complaining about going to church with them; bored, not engaged, etc. Then they stumbled upon Sacred Heart, and the kids said they wished they could come here every weekend. The parents cut a deal with them: if you don’t complain, we will come here every weekend. Then came the shocking part...they concluded with, “We live in Grand Island.” (Over 140 miles away!)
